Finding Your Niche Market

The best place to find niche markets is to begin by looking for general markets that are popular. Since many people enjoy gardening, you could start your research by looking up how many gardening books there are on websites like Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com. You will probably find thousands of result pages. By continually narrowing your search, you will begin to find smaller markets and eventually niche markets. There is a danger of becoming too narrow and finding groups that are not large enough to profit from, so be sure that you find groups that are small, but growing in popularity or who have a steady level of participants.

You can measure the popularity of a group by conducting web searches. Typical niche markets that are profitable usually have between 10,000 and 50,000 results on search engines. Any larger, and you may have more competition from other businesses. Any smaller, and their may not be as much interest in your product.

After narrowing down possible niche markets in gardening, you may have come up with rose gardens, which can be narrowed down to specific types of roses used in rose gardens. Your niche may be groups that enjoy planting specific types of roses and who need more information on how to do this in different types of soil, climates, and other conditions.

Incidentally, along the way, you may also discover the types of products you can sell to these niche markets. A gardening ebook about a specific type of rose could be very profitable as long as you sell it to the right groups of people.
Other places to find niche markets include:

  • Newspapers, magazines, trade publications, ezines, newsletters, blogs
  • Advertisement and classified ad sections in newspapers and magazines
  • Online classified ad sites like Craigslist.com
  • Online auction sites like ebay
  • Bookstores, online book dealers
  • Retail stores
  • Conversations with family and friends

As you can see, generating ideas is the easy part. Conducting careful research to find specific niche markets takes the most time. But this is time well-spent because once you find a few niche markets; you can begin finding those interested in your product without having to compete with other businesses or with the Internet in general.
